Last night I had the honor of team-teaching in the URBAN MINISTRIES & CHURCH PLANTING COURSE (@ VFCC) with Brad Leach and Brian Bolt. During the class, a young lady asked a very powerful question:
"It seems that ministry and especially church planting involves taking a lot of risks. How do you deal with the potential for failure or disappointment in taking all of these risks?"
Excellent question! And one that I have had to face up to over and again. In reality, life is filled with risks. Whether we are in ministry, planting churches, leading a family, leading in business - steps of faith and risk are all a part of it.
In fact, you can't truly follow Jesus without Him asking you to take some risks. God never called anyone to an easy path. He always calls us to a walk of faith. He asks us to lead a life that requires his involvement for us to succeed.
But as I pondered her question - this answer came to my mind - which provides for me a lot of peace.
God has not called me to succeed. He has called me to obey. Success and failure are in His hands. My job is to make sure that I am working on His agenda and not my own. And if at the end of the day, I know that I have obeyed what He has asked me to do - in that I have found true success - regardless of the immediate, outward, visible results.
